Leave No Trace vs Other People

Hikers vs the General Population

Hikers Leave No Trace and Keep Nature CleanIt’s amazing when I go out hiking and notice that it’s rare to find a single piece of trash on the trails. But, unfortunately, just walking along the roadside there’s enough to fill a dumpster within 5 miles.

Why is it that hikers are conscious of leaving no trace and no trash, but the rest of the population just tosses everything out their windows driving down the road?

Quite honestly I find it infuriating to have one group of people making a serious effort to keep the environment clean and healthy but the rest of the population seems oblivious to their actions.

It’s not just that it looks nasty, but we all know the majority of the plastics and metals last for ages, causing a constant release of chemicals as they slowly break down. And, though glass may not have the same effects, it’s dangerous when broken and animal life can become trapped in it.

There’s simply no excuse for it. Hikers can spend thousands of miles and carry their trash out of the woods and people can’t drive from a fast food restaurant to their home and dispose of their garbage.

I’d like to be able to encourage people to learn to throw away their trash, but it seems to simply be a difference in mentality between people who spend time in nature and those who don’t.
